At least one race each season is held in memory of former MZ racer John Welfare.

John was a dedicated racer who loved the sport and being part of the MZ Racing Club. The club loved him too and those who knew John will always remember him smiling. He was warm and welcoming, helped fellow riders when he could and above all was regarded as a true gentleman. John’s wife Debbie and son Jonathon were a constant source of support, their presence in the MZ paddock made the Club all the better.

John sadly and suddenly passed away in 2008. It was felt the best way to remember John was to simply hold a race or a meeting in his name. Many bikes also still bear a small black number 4 as a mark of respect.

For anyone who was not fortunate enough to meet John, this special weekend also gives people the opportunity to step back and look at the MZ Racing Club through John’s eyes. He loved the banter, the laughs, everyone mucking in to get on track and the competitive but fair racing. All these elements hopefully remain the same and would make John proud.
